سازمان ملل متحد در ‌سال‌جاری میلادی، بیست‌وچهارمین سالگرد روز بین‌المللی ریشه‌کن ساختن فقر را گرامی داشته و بر نیاز به درک و پرداختن به مسأله تحقیر و محرومیتی تأکید می‌کند که بسیاری از افرادی که در فقر شدید به سر می‌برند، متحمل آن می‌شوند.
هم‌اکنون، یک نفر از هر هشت نفر همچنان در فقر شدید به سر می‌برد و بسیاری از آنان از گرسنگی و سوءتغذیه همچنین دسترسی محدود به تحصیلات و سایر خدمات پایه‌ای رنج می‌برند. آنان اغلب در معرض تبعیض اجتماعی، محرومیت و عدم‌مشارکت در تصیم‌گیری هستند.
«پایان بخشیدن به تمامی گونه‌های فقر در همه‌جا»، آرمان توسعه پایدار سازمان ملل متحد به صورت مشخص این امر را مورد تأیید قرار می‌دهد که فقر از عوامل گوناگون مرتبط با هم ناشی می‌شود و افرادی را متاثر می‌سازد که در فقر شدید زندگی می‌کنند.
این به آن معناست که به‌منظور درک کامل فقر در ابعاد متعدد، باید آن را فراتر از نبود درآمد صرف یا آن‌چه ببینیم که برای رفاه مادی مانند غذا، مسکن، زمین و سایر دارایی‌ها، مورد نیاز است.

Moving from Humiliation and Exclusion to Participation

This year UN will mark the 24th anniversary of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP), underscoring the need to recognize and address the humiliation and exclusion endured by many people living in poverty.
Today, 1 in 8 people still live in extreme poverty, many suffering from hunger and malnutrition as well as limited access to education and other basic services. They are often subjected to social discrimination, exclusion and the lack of participation in decision-making.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere” explicitly recognizes that poverty results not from the lack of just one thing but from many different interrelated factors that affect the lives of people living in poverty.
This means we must go beyond seeing poverty merely as the lack of income or what is necessary for material well-being — such as food, housing, land, and other assets – in order to fully understand poverty in its multiple dimensions.
